PORT ANGELES – Clallam County commissioners had a hearing Tuesday night in Port Angeles to take another look at a proposed county-wide fireworks ban.

Commissioner Randy Johnson says he was happy to see a large and vocal turnout, and he says opinions seem to be about a 50/50 split, for and against, although one participant showed up with a petition against a ban that had about 600 signatures.

Johnson added that he’s not too sure they’re any closer to a compromise at this point, although there have been some helpful suggestions.

Commissioner Mark Ozias says possible solutions could include further restrictions on dates and times for discharge of fireworks, or regulating them based on geographic regions around the county. He also mentioned an idea floated by former county commissioner Martha McKeeth Ireland.

Commissioner Johnson told us that they’ll need additional work sessions on the matter, but he doesn’t expect another meeting to be called on the fireworks issue for a few months or so.
