HOOD CANAL –  A 20-year-old New Jersey man wanted for first-degree murder died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound early Tuesday morning after opening fire at vehicles near the Hood Canal Bridge.

20-year-old Krishna Mahadevan-Prasad was stopped on eastbound State Route 104 at the west end of the bridge, traveling in a black Honda Accord. The bridge was closed to traffic for scheduled evening maintenance.

The State Patrol says  Mahadevan-Prasad opened fire on the occupants of the cars both in front of and behind him at around 3:45 AM, before taking his own life.

We spoke with the driver of the car in the front vehicle, 28 year-old Michael Brooks of Port Angeles, who was taking his two daughters to SeaTac airport. He says he had no contact with the man behind them before shots ripped through his rear window, narrowly missing him and his daughters, who were sleeping in the rear seat.

The driver in the rear car was grazed by a bullet to his elbow, but was released from the scene.

Trooper Chelsea Hodgson says they were able to funnel traffic around the scene and avoid a major traffic backup during the onsite investigation.
