OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK – Authorities have confirmed human remains found last weekend in Olympic National park belonged to Jacob Gray. The Clallam County Coroner confirmed the identity yesterday afternoon after further examination of the remains.

The 22-year-old Port Townsend resident has been missing for more than a year.

The break in the case came with the discovery late last Friday afternoon, August 10. A field crew of park employees and volunteers found abandoned outdoor recreation equipment and clothing in a very remote area near Hoh Lake in the Daniel J. Evans Wilderness of Olympic National Park. The clothing and equipment matched the description of items related to Gray.

Gray’s unattended bicycle and bike trailer were discovered along Sol Duc Hot Springs Road on the afternoon of April 6, 2017, leading Park Rangers and dozens of volunteers to conduct a search in that area for several days, turning up no clues. Some light clothing and camping gear were unaccounted for, however.

The remains have been transferred to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office for further forensic investigation.  A full report is still pending. Until then, Olympic National Park officials say the case remains an open investigation.
