PORT ANGELES – Our recent story about a Port Angeles woman’s suicide in the Clallam County jail over the weekend has left many questioning how it could happen despite the presence of security cameras throughout the facility.

Saturday morning, corrections deputies found 42-year-old Amy Specht hanging from a bedsheet, fashioned as a noose and draped over her cell door. The suicide was captured on the jail’s security camera system. At the time of hanging, the jail area was occupied by 4 other female inmates, including Specht’s cell mate.

We asked the County’s Chief Criminal Deputy Brian King to give us some insight into how Specht could commit suicide without anyone noticing.

What about the four other inmates who were present at the time?

Was there any reason for jail personnel to suspect that she might take her own life?

Deputies and medics tried to resuscitate Specht, but she was pronounced dead at the jail.

Specht was arrested August 13th on outstanding arrest warrants for forgery and theft. She was in jail on $10,000 bail.
