PORT ANGELES – Someone taped a sheet of paper with the word “LIAR” onto the window of the Republican headquarters in Port Angeles this week. It was positioned in front of a cardboard cut-out of Donald Trump.

Matt Rainwater, chairman of the Republican Party of Clallam County, says that incident and other similar acts have caused his volunteers to feel intimidated about coming to work. He also says he thinks he knows who did it.

We talked with Assistant Police Chief Jason Viada and asked if the incident rose to the level of a crime or misdemeanor. He says that under Washington State law, taping a sheet of paper onto a storefront window did not fall under the definition of Maliscious Mischief or Vandalism. He also offered that if someone printed the same word onto a sign and carried it up and down the street, it would be considered free speech.

As to whether the act could be considered intimidating, that’s a matter of opinion. Rainwater had this to add:

The local Chair of the Democratic Party Craig Ritchie gave us this response:

Officer Viada says Republicans have requested that police increase their patrols of Republican headquarters.
