PORT ANGELES – Port Angeles schools will be closed Thursday, and it appears they will remain so unless the District and para educators can reach an agreement on a wage increase.

The paras announced they would go on strike Thursday if a settlement couldn’t be reached. As of this afternoon, negotiations were still under way with the assistance of a state mediator.

On Tuesday, members of the Port Angeles Teacher’s Union voted 76% in favor of honoring the picket lines if para educators go on strike.

The School District issued a statement this afternoon which reads in part:

“Given the uncertainty if an agreement is forthcoming today, and the need to let students and families know to make alternate plans, Port Angeles Schools are not opening schools tomorrow. In addition, families should expect a daily update with the status of school for the next day.

All activities scheduled for Thursday, November 15, are still expected to happen. Middle and high school athletics are also continuing as the coaches are covered under a separate contract.

As of tomorrow morning, all school buildings will be closed to the public as well as to any staff not in paid status or scheduled to work. The District’s Central Services Building will continue to be open and operate on a normal schedule.”
