PORT ANGELES – Clallam County’s sheriff says the county will have to address a need for more deputies sometime soon.

Appearing on KONP’s Todd Ortloff Show, sheriff Bill Benedict says the call volume in the county has gone up three-fold since the department last added deputies. That was in the 1990’s when the department went to 24-hour coverage.

Benedict says, short term, the department might have to make some adjustments to help keep up with those volumes…

But he says those changes will need to happen in the next few years. He says he thinks increased revenue for property assessments should help cover adding at least a couple more deputies if the time comes. But he says that decision isn’t entirely up to him…

Benedict also says, as the county’s population grows, there will be some allowances and perhaps some more revenue for staff…

Benedict easily won reelection last week to a fourth term. He says this will be his last term.
