scam

CLALLAM COUNTY – The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office was notified that there is another phone scam circulating in our area.

A Sequim Resident received a call on Monday from a male with a southern accent stating he was “Sgt. Hollis with the Clallam County Superior Court” and that she had been summoned for jury duty twice and failed to show up. Due to her failure to appear the judge issued a citation.

In this case the caller had the resident’s name right, but thought she was still living at an old address in Port Angeles.

It appears this person is impersonating Sgt. Hollis and getting names and numbers online to call in hopes of obtaining personal information. This identical scam (including the name Sgt. Hollis) circulated through our county two years ago.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office does have a Sgt. Hollis, but neither they nor the Clallam County Court call people about not appearing for jury duty.

These scammers routinely attempt to obtain enough information about the residents to appear legitimate and convince people to give them bank account and credit card numbers. Unfortunately, enough people fall victim to these calls that the scammers continue their efforts.

Sheriff Benedict is asking us all to warn our friends and neighbors about these scams and to know the best response to these kinds of calls is to hang up. He recommends you do not speak to the caller, and do not call the number back that you see on your caller ID.
