PORT ANGELES – Stealing the log book from a transit bus has landed a Port Angeles man in jail for 50 days.

43-year-old Jason Spaulding was sentenced this week after a jury found him guilty.

In February, prosecutors say sheriff’s deputies were called to report of a theft that occurred on a Clallam Transit bus. The bus operator testified at trial Spaulding stole the heavy, metal log book as he exited from the bus. When confronted Spaulding reportedly threw the book down in the middle of the road. The driver was afraid and didn’t immediately pick up the book.

But later in the day, Spaulding was detained on an unrelated matter. Spaulding’s then mother retrieved the log book from his car and gave it to sheriff’s officials.

Prosecutors say although the stolen log book does not hold significant monetary value, its value primarily comes from the information contained in it. Clallam Transit uses the books to track fuel and maintenance records.

Spaulding remains in custody on an unrelated felony matter.
