SEATTLE (AP) — A Seattle metals recycling facility will make more than $1 million in improvements to settle a lawsuit claiming the company discharged dangerous chemicals into the Duwamish River.

KING-TV reports the lawsuit was filed against Seattle Iron and Metals by Puget Soundkeeper, which monitors water quality in the sound.

Executive director Chris Wilke says the company shreds metal from vehicles and appliances so it’s easier to process.

Wilke says that creates pollution that’s exposed to storm water.

The settlement will require enclosure of the facility’s metal shredder to contain dust and debris, paving of a dirt lot and wetland storm water treatment systems.

The settlement also requires enhanced storm water monitoring, reduction of debris piles, wind fences to stop neighborhood dust contamination and other changes.
