OLYMPIA (AP) — Are you a fan of studded tires? Washington’s House Transportation Committee is considering a proposal where all studded tires purchased after July 1 of this year would carry a $100 fee. The same proposal calls for an outright ban on studded tires in the year 2025.

If passed, it would replace the current $5 fee and would raise an estimated $3.5 million over the next two years, but still wouldn’t make up for the estimated damage the tires do to state roads.

The bill would allow drivers who prefer studded tires over other winter tire options currently on the market to use them until July 2025, but eventually phasing out the tires they have now.
