COLVILLE, Wash. (AP) — A U.S. Border Patrol agent rescued a stranded snowshoer in northeastern Washington who had been fasting and was too weak to continue.

U.S. Border Agent Supervisor Bill Kingsford says authorities asked agents for help Sunday after they were called by a local resident who said he had been fasting for 40 days and was trying to snowshoe when he became ill.

A helicopter crew located the man in the Onion Creek area but they were unable to land because of mountainous terrain and snow.

Kingsford says a border agent used an ATV to find the man and that he gave him first aid and took him to an awaiting ambulance.

He says as of Sunday evening the man was in stable condition.
