PORT ANGELES – Port Angeles Mayor Sissi Bruch is expected to sign a resolution at tonight’s City Council meeting that will approve the renaming of West End Park to Pebble Beach Park- sŋaʔŋáʔant (Pebble) cáwŋən (Beach) ʔəssaqɬúŋt (Park) in both Klallam and English.

In January of this year, the Parks & Recreation Department received a “Naming Public Facilities Nomination Form” from Jessica and Gillian Elofson, who are mother and daughter and also members of the tribe.

Parks Director Corey Delikat has pointed out that the name West End Park was always considered a place-holder until a better name was selected.

On February 21, the Parks Commission reviewed the application along with over 100 letters of support, and after listening to public support during the public comment portion of the meeting, the Commission unanimously voted to recommend a resolution be forwarded to the City Council approving the renaming of West End Park to Pebble Beach Park.

In addition, Klallam names were chosen for the two pocket beaches within the park. They are Klallam words meaning: sxʷtxʷás – To beach a canoe or boat, and sxʷtčcéʔnəŋ̕ -to walk along the edge of the water on the beach.
