PORT ANGELES – The Port Angeles Parks Commission tonight will consider a grassroots push to get an iron security fence installed around the liberty bell structure at Veterans Memorial Park downtown, which would primarily be paid for through crowd funding.

Iris Winslow is a member of the Commission.

A group of citizens has come together in response to what many think is disrespectful treatment of the park by some who regularly congregate there. There have been many instances of drug and alcohol use under the cover of the bell structure.

A GoFundMe page has been set up with the goal of raising $17,000 for a wrought iron fence and gate that would only be opened for the bell ringing ceremony to honor veterans that happens on the last Friday of each month. So far, the GoFundMe page has raised $575.

The Parks Commission will consider the recommendation at their meeting tonight at 6:00 in council chambers.
