PORT ANGELES – No shows for jury duty in Clallam County Superior Court prompted delay of a trial and reshuffle of the court calendar.

Last week, only about half the people summoned for jury duty showed up.

Clallam County chief criminal deputy prosecutor Michelle Devlin says the judge determined having just over two dozen potential jurors wasn’t enough for the trial set to start that day.

Clallam County prosecuting attorney Mark Nichols says no one has figured out why such a large number of people didn’t show and didn’t call in with an excuse.

Ditching jury duty is a misdemeanor. A judge can order deputies to find you and physically bring you into the court room, but that is uncommon.

Nichols says if the trend of no shows continues, they may have to enlarge the jury pool. That would mean local citizens could be summoned more often for jury.
