PORT TOWNSEND – There’s a happy ending to a story from last week when it was reported that someone stole the Bronze plaque that honors the soldiers from Jefferson County who fought and died for their country in WWI and WWII.

The plaque had been on a pedestal at the entrance to Jefferson County Memorial Athletic Field in Port Townsend for decades, but on Wednesday of last week it appears to have been pried from its concrete base, especially coarse because it was done less than two weeks before Memorial Day.

We called Port Townsend Police today to get an update, and Officer Ash Moore had this to say:

“It’s weird that you guys are calling because I actually just recovered it. So I got a call from a local business owner who oddly enough wishes to remain nameless because it was turned in by one of his clients and he can’t reveal who is crying is because of attorney-client privilege, but evidently it appeared that somebody tried to do as we thought they were going to do and melt it down or get some kind of crap for it. And he was a very vague about how the other person stumbled upon it, but he did make sure I knew that that person didn’t actually wasn’t the one that stole it.”

Was it damaged?

“No, it’s in pristine condition. I’ve already called Matt Tyler from Jefferson County Park. He’s just ecstatic. He’s going to make arrangements to come get it at some point here in the near future and probably have it put back in place just in time for Memorial Day.”
