PORT ANGELES – A power problem caused the city of Port Angeles to spill tens of thousands of gallons of sewage into the city’s harbor.

Tree limbs fell into power lines about 5 pm Tuesday. That caused a power bump that rippled through the city. That power surge caused the city’s wastewater treatment plant to malfunction. City officials say about 87-thousand gallons of wastewater was discharged into the harbor.

Officials say the sewage had received primary treatment. However, it hadn’t gone through the secondary treatment or a chlorination process.

The treatment plant was back up and running within two hours once the failure was identified. Officials say they’ve identified the cause of the failure condition and are working to prevent similar problems in the future.

The Department of Ecology, the Department of Health, Clallam Environmental Health, and Feiro Marine Life Center were all notified of the spill.

So far, there are no health warnings issued due to the spill.
