SEQUIM – Sequim School Board member Robin Henrikson resigned her position in July and that means the Board is looking for someone to fill that position, but only for the rest of the term, which ends in November.

The right candidate lives in District 1, which is the part of the Sequim School District between Carlsborg Road and the Dungeness River. They’re also favoring someone who is not planning to run for the permanent position in the Fall, and there’s a good reason for that, according to School Superintendent Rob Clark.

“The board made the decision that we do have one candidate who’s running for the position and one soon to be announced write-in. If one or the other of them applied they could choose to appoint them, and then if they were elected they would just continue on. The board has made the comment that they would like to approve somebody who’s not running for the position, just because they don’t want to play favorites.”

For that reason, Clark says they’ve been reaching out to past board members to see if any of them are interested in the job, but of course anyone qualified is encouraged to apply.

You might be asking yourself why they even bother to go to the trouble of filling a seat for just two months. We put the question to Clark.

“State regulation, state law says we have 90 days to appoint someone, so if it was less than 90 days up to November 6th or 7th, whenever the election is, we would not have had to appoint anyone, but it’s 92 days. Either that or tell the state that we’re very poor at math.”

Applications for the Appointed Board position will be accepted until September 5, 2019 by 4:00pm

The Board of Directors will interview candidates on Monday, September 9th during the regular board meeting, at 6:00pm. The appointed board member will be seated at the October 7th board meeting.

Application packets are available at the district office Monday – Thursday 8-3pm.
