PORT ANGELES – The school year in Port Angeles begins with new digs for the district’s administrative staff, and their old building will soon be up for sale.

All operations were moved in July from the Central Services Building (CSB) on Fourth Street to the Lincoln Center on West Ninth.

The move is one of a series of recommendations put forth in May by School Superintendent Marty Brewer as ways to both save money and bring in much-needed revenue for the district.

We asked Brewer what comes next for the CSB and how much he thought it might sell for.

“Yeah, at this point in time we have some minor renovations to do of the the CSB building, some assessments and some legal documents, before we would get that property out on the market. We do not know what the assessed value is at this point in time. And because it’s a public facility, all of the proceeds for the sale of the CSB building will go into Capital funds for the district, and we all know that the capital needs of the Port Angeles School District are very high. So those Capital funds will be very very useful.”

The district has also begun leasing spaces at the Lincoln Center to non-profit organizations as another way to raise revenues. There are also talks of possibly selling property to the south of Stevens Middle School, getting appraisal for property and timber value for another piece of property nearby, as well as selling the now-vacant Fairview School building.

“Down the road a few years, once we get a capital plan in place that the voters will approve, we will be looking to sell Fairview. And we’ll time that with the ability to collect State matching dollars for that so that we can reinvest those State match dollars, take Fairview out of circulation and receive dollars to put back into existing school buildings. So Fairview will be several years down the road, depending upon you know, our capital support and efforts with our voters of the Port Angeles School District.”
