OLYMPIA, Wash. – A homicide investigation is underway after a person was found dead along a scenic walkway not far from the Capitol Campus and governor’s mansion in Olympia, the Washington State Patrol reports.

The investigation began after a passerby found a person who appeared to be deceased beside Capitol Lake on Deschutes Parkway on Saturday night.

Police, state troopers and medics responded to the scene, between 5th Avenue and Marathon Park, where they found the victim. The person, who still has not been positively identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Patrol detectives are leading the investigation because the area is considered part of the Capitol Campus.

Sgt. Darren Wright of the State Patrol said the area where the body was found is “usually pretty safe.”

The homicide investigation is still in its early stages, and few other details are available.
