northern-lights

PORT ANGELES – Thanks to a minor geomagnetic storm, the northern lights may be visible here in Clallam County starting late Wednesday night and possibly through Friday night.

According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, an explosion of solar energy from the sun is set to slam into the Earth Wednesday night. While that’s not a cause for concern in terms of our safety, there is a potential for weak fluctuations in the power grid.

The best time to view the aurora borealis will be from 10:00 pm to 1:00 am.

Obviously, a clear sky is needed to see the northern lights, and lucky for us that’s the forecast, at least for Wednesday and Thursday nights. Just get to the darkest area you can, because light pollution can hamper visibility of the northern lights. Look north, low on the horizon.

BTW: If you see the northern lights, take a picture and post it to our Facebook page.
