The U.S. Coast Guard has stopped searching for a 4-year-old Oregon boy who was swept out to sea Saturday along with his 7-year-old sister and his father.
The sister’s body was pulled from the waves by a police officer but she was pronounced dead at a hospital. The father, 47-year-old Jeremy Stiles, survived.
Authorities say the Portland man was holding both children when they were swept into the ocean. They had been visiting near Cannon Beach, where spectacular storm-driven waves attract tourists each winter.
A storm combined with an extreme high tide made the beaches especially dangerous the day the tragedy occurred.
