The Department of Ecology will hold an Open House next Tuesday at 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Olympic Medical Center, Linkletter Hall in Port Angeles to answer your questions and present information about Port Angeles Harbor west end cleanup project.

The task at hand is to clean up pollutants from decades of industrial uses. The parties responsible for the cleanup costs are Georgia Pacific, Nippon, Merrill and Ring, the Port of Port Angeles and the City of Port Angeles.

City Manager Nathan West says he hopes the final clean up plan will adhere to best science.

“Yeah, it’s really important to the city of Port Angeles that we take an approach to clean up that is based on sound science. That we take one that ultimately is comprehensive in nature, that really thinks about the human and benthic health of the Port Angeles Harbor. Ultimately, all of us want to have a clean harbor in our front yard at the end of the day, and it’s really important that we get there. With that in mind, the Western Port Angeles Harbor Group has really focussed  on best available science, finding solutions ultimately that will work for the long term,  and ensure that we get a clean harbor and a good product as a result of all the work that is going into the clean up process .”

Ecology invites the public to review and comment on two documents about planning the cleanup of sediments in western Port Angeles Harbor. The two documents are the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study and an amendment to the Agreed Order.  The comment period opened January 16, 2020.
