PORT ANGELES – School buildings are closed statewide until at least April 27 because of COVID-19 outbreak, but the news has just come down from the state Education Department that, one way or another, school must go on.
According to State Superintendent Chris Reykdal, Districts must resume class in some format by March 30 (next Monday). He largely left the details up to individual school districts. Some districts will focus on online teaching. Others will send home learning packets.

In the Port Angeles School District, students have had 2 weeks off from learning and teachers have been creating a new teaching model based on online learning. Parents were told to pick up learning materials this week or early next week at their schools.

District spokeswoman Jennifer Sperline says students who don’t have computers at home are being issued Chromebook tablets.

The home schooling model will continue for 2 weeks before Spring Break begins in Port Angeles on Monday, April 6.

Things are a little different in Sequim, where online teaching began this week and Spring Break begins this coming Monday.
Superintendent Rob Clark says that about 95% of his students have online access at home and the district has made other arrangements for those students who need it.

Clark emphasized that, regardless of the current difficulties, he wants next week’s Spring Break to be just that: a one-week break for everyone in his District from the business of teaching and learning.
