LANDER, Wyo. — A single-engine plane piloted by a Port Angeles man crashed into the waters of Wyoming lake, killing a passenger in the plane.

Fremont County sheriff’s officials say nearby campers helped the pilot, Scott Fitzgerald get out of Frye Lake southwest of Lander in the Shoshone National Forest after the crash Sunday morning.

The Sheriff’s report says Fitzgerald was taken to a local hospital and later moved to a hospital out of state. His condition wasn’t known.

The crash killed the passenger, a 33-year-old Lander, Wyoming man whose name wasn’t released. Witnesses said the Kitfox plane flew low and wobbled before plunging into the lake and catching fire. Search and rescue workers later removed the victim and plane from the lake.

Fitzgerald houses his plane in a hangar at Fairchild International Airport here in Port Angeles. We spoke today with Airport Development Manager Dan Gase.

“A really, really nice guy. He just loves aviation. A real enthusiast. He’s been doing a lot of adventurous flying on river bars and different cool places that his type of airplane can go. And I had heard he was on a trip, but haven’t heard anything about him until this morning.”

National forest, sheriff’s and National Transportation Safety Board officials were investigating.
