BLAINE, Wash. (AP) — There’s proof now those homemade Asian Giant Hornet traps actually work. Washington state agriculture workers found their first Asian giant hornet on July 14 in a bottle trap set near the Canadian border, and state entomologists confirmed its identity Wednesday.

The invasive insect was first documented in the state late last year. It’s the first such hornet to be found in a trap rather than in the environment, as the state’s five previous confirmed sightings were.
