LINCOLN CITY, Ore. (KATU) – A man is in a Portland-area hospital after police say he shot himself in the groin area with a handgun Sunday while in a grocery store’s checkout line.

Officers were called out on reports of a gunshot injury at McKay’s Market in Lincoln City. They arrived to find 29-year-old Nicholas Ellingford had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his groin area and leg. He was flown to Emanuel Hospital in Portland in a LifeFlight helicopter.

Initial reports state Ellingford was waiting in a checkout line when he pulled a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol from his waistband to show a friend.

As he was putting the gun back in the front of his pants near the zipper, he accidentally pulled the trigger, police say.

A bullet went through his groin area and out the lower thigh of his leg, “narrowly missing his femoral artery,” according to the Lincoln City Police Department.

No word on his current condition.
