OLYMPIC NATIONAL FOREST – One climber was killed and another injured while ascending The Brothers Mountain in the Olympic National Forest Sunday.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reports a 31-year-old woman from Seattle died after she and her climbing partner had fallen on the steep and snowy ascent. Another climbing party called in the accident at 1:00 pm. They stayed with the injured climber but were unable to reach the victim, who had fallen further through an opening in the snow and over a rock face.

Rescue crews with specialized climbing equipment were flown in by helicopter while others hiked in from below to recover the victim’s body and get the injured climber to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
