PORT ANGELES – The new Dream Playground at Erickson Playfield is only the latest addition to the park. A planned pump track will also be added next year near the skate park. For planners, the only piece of the puzzle missing has been the financing to add security and safety lighting to the entire park, but that’s about to change.

Al and Nancy Oman of Port Angeles have decided to host a large estate sale on Halloween weekend and donate all the proceeds to the Dream Playground Foundation specifically to pay for lighting.

Al Oman was one of the hard-working volunteers that helped build the new playground. He later joined the Foundation Board. Parks and Recreation Director Corey Delikat says that’s when Al learned about the lighting issue.

“Al is a great person in the community, and after we finished the build and at our next meeting, he just offered this up. And it was just an amazing, generous offer. And I think we’ve already…it hasn’t even started yet, and we’ve already, I think, banked $1,000, he’s already raised through some sales before the opening on the Halloween weekend.”

Al’s parents passed away in recent years, leaving the Omans with a life’s accumulation of furniture, tools, fine china, silver, appliances, and much more.

Delikat says this has happened so fast that they haven’t had time to come up with a lighting design or cost estimate, but he believes the resources will be available to light up not only the Dream Playground, but the entire park.

The sale will be held in a large, detached building at 214 Hancock Ave. in Port Angeles from 8am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday, October 30 and 31. If playground supporters want to help with high-quality items to add to the sale, the Omans have a modest capacity to include them.

Delikat adds that since the Halloween weekend is all about kids and play, costumes are encouraged.
