PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Roughriders girls fast pitch team clinched the Olympic League Championship with a hard fought well-played game with a 5-1 win against a tough Sequim Wolf team that proved they will be a tough draw at the upcoming district tournament.

Junior right fielder Lily Halberg started the scoring with a Homer over the fence for a 1-1 tie. The Wolves had scored in the top of the first when Taylor Rome scored on a single by Mia Pozernick. In the bottom of the 3rd Roughrider Sophomore shortstop Natalie Robinson cleared the center field fence for a three-run homer to give Port Angeles a 4-1 lead. The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the 6th when Taylor Worthington, Teagen Clark, Heidi Leitz and Emi Halberg all hit singles with Clark scoring to make the final score 5-1. Pitcher Teagan Clark was outstanding giving up one run on five hits with six strike outs. Roughrider Senior Peyton Rudd got on base twice with a single and a run scored. The Roughriders are expected to be the #1 Seed in this weekend’s district tournament. The Roughriders would play at 2 pm on Friday against the #8 seed.

As disappointed as the Wolves were with the loss to their rival Roughriders, the Wolves came back Saturday morning with an emotional 7-5 win over the 9th ranked Olympic Trojans. The win moved the Wolves to a #14 ranking. With the Trojans well shutting down the Sequim bats and the Wolves trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the 6th the Wolves sent an incredible 11 batters to the plate on 6 hits, a walk and a hit batter to score 6 runs to give the Wolves an unbelievable 7-4 lead. The Wolf heroes were many. As usual, senior Cristy Grubb lead the way with three singles and a run scored as well as making 3 great plays from behind the plate. 3rd baseman Michaela Green playing the best baseball of her career got on base all three times and scored three runs. Her defensive play at 3rd base has been outstanding. Left fielder Mia Pozernick had two singles and scored a run. Center fielder Lily Fili had a big-time double in the 6th inning that started the scoring for the Wolves. Addie Smith had two singles and a run scored. Jordan Kidd had a huge hit in the 6th and scored a run. Pitcher Angel Wagner was solid, and Laney Vigg came in late for the save.

The drawing for the district tournament is tonight and Sequim is expected to get a 6, 7 or 9 seed. If that happens, they would play at Noon Friday. KONP Radio will be broadcasting the Wolves and Roughrider games at the District Tournament in Lacey. Oly Archibald and Jim Cheney will have the live play by play.

In district baseball action, the red-hot Port Angeles Roughriders lost a tough a game to White River 7-1 finishing their season. In the first game of the doubleheader at Foss high school, the Roughriders beat Orting 16-8. The Roughriders won three straight games in the District Tournament. The Roughriders have a young team and should be a major force in next year’s Olympic league.

In the State 2A soccer tournament the Sequim Wolves the #13 seed will take on #4 seed Burlington Edison Wednesday night at Anacortes with the kickoff at 6 pm.
