PORT ANGELES – This week the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office is talking up a safety program they’ve implemented called Project Lifesaver, designed to help them locate vulnerable people who go missing.

Last Sunday at about 4:00pm, PENCOM Dispatch got a call about a missing 60-year-old Port Angeles man. Two minutes after the call, they were able to identify the missing man as a Project Lifesaver Client, who had last been seen around five hours earlier.

As a participant of the Project Lifesaver program, the man wears an electronic device, about the size of a small watch, on his person, that emits a specific radio frequency. In cooperation with Port Angeles Police, deputies responded to the area with equipment designed to track that frequency on the client’s transmitter.

They located the missing man within a half hour about five blocks from his home and transported him back to his caregiver.

Project Lifesaver is particularly useful for tracking and rescuing people with cognitive conditions who tend to wander, including those with Alzheimer’s, Autism, Down’s syndrome and Dementia.

The Sheriff’s wants everyone to know that the service is available for all qualified participants living within Clallam County.
