WALLA WALLA, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a Washington State Patrol trooper was shot and seriously injured in Walla Walla.

Law enforcement officials say someone rammed Trooper Dean Atkinson’s vehicle, then shot him in the face at around 5:20 p.m. Atkinson remained conscious and drove himself a little more than a mile and a half to Providence St. Mary Medical Center. He was then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and is now in stable condition.

Troopers said the suspect was in custody by 6 p.m. after being arrested while driving in eastern Oregon. They say the State Patrol had contact with the suspect earlier in the day.

An investigation is ongoing.
