In case you were wondering why the intersection at 5th and Peabody was closed this afternoon, Port Angeles Deputy Police Chief Jason Viada called in this report.

“This afternoon at about 2:30, the fire department and police department both responded to a fire alarm activation at an apartment complex near Fifth and Peabody and discovered that a person that was there had started a small fire in his kitchen, and it looks like it was an intentional fire. Officers responded and we’re working to get the man out of his apartment building and learned that he had suffered some sort of an episode. And they were able to get inside and quickly get the person out of the apartment. We were able to keep the situation from getting any worse, and detectives are still on scene, working in conjunction with the Prosecutor’s Office as a possible arson investigation.”

Viada said the street was reopened as of 4:00.
