SEQUIM – A man was arrested on assault charges in Sequim after threatening a wheelchair-bound resident with a knife and a screwdriver.

It was about 4:00PM on Monday when the victim called 911 to report a man had waved a small pocketknife at him as he walked toward the victim, coming within a few feet. Police told KONP that the suspect then walked away briefly, but returned and began swinging a screwdriver attached to a cord in his direction.

The victim left the area to avoid being assaulted. This took place at an apartment complex on the east end of town, but police say it does not appear that the suspect is a resident at the complex.

Officers contacted 44-year-old Jonathon Laharne walking a short distance away because he matched the description given by the victim. A pocketknife and screwdriver wrapped in paracord were found in his pockets during a frisk for weapons.

Laharne was arrested and transported to the Clallam County Jail where he was booked on assault charges and remains in custody at this time.
