PORT ANGELES — Starting next month, food trucks and other mobile vendors in Port Angeles will have a clearer, more streamlined process to set up shop. The City Council has approved Municipal Code Amendment 24-74, creating a dedicated permitting system for mobile businesses and the private properties that host them. Previously, vendors had to navigate a complicated system of temporary permits, as city regulations were originally designed for small sidewalk stands like hot dog carts in 1988. City officials say the new rules modernize the process, making it easier for food trucks and other mobile businesses to operate legally while ensuring fairness for property owners and the broader community.

Under the updated system, vendors operating four days or fewer per year or providing free services can apply for a minor permit at no cost, while those selling goods or services five or more days per year will need a major permit, which costs $95.10. To further simplify the process, the city will now accept hand-drawn site plans, allow vendors to use a nearby public restroom instead of requiring one on-site, and clarify that the permits apply only to outdoor activities.

The update has been in development since last summer, with the Planning Commission reviewing proposals and gathering public input. After a public hearing in December and final adjustments in January, the City Council officially approved the changes on February 4. With the new system set to take effect next month, vendors can begin preparing now. More details on how to apply will be available on the city’s website or through the permitting office.
