LOCAL SPORTS: Wolves Sweep Riders in Volleyball, Port Angeles Dominates Soccer 4-0, Rivalry Football Clash Set for Homecoming

PORT ANGELES — In volleyball, the Wolves swept the Roughriders in three straight sets, 3-0.

But on the soccer pitch, Port Angeles turned the tables, shutting out Sequim 4-0.

It was once again the Riders’ “green M&M connection” — Mariah Traband and Emma Desjardins — combining for all four goals. Traband scored first in the 26th minute on an assist from Desjardins. Just before halftime, Desjardins fired in her own goal to make it 2-0, then scored again four minutes later on a feed from Traband. In the 51st minute, Traband finished off a turnover, beating the keeper one-on-one.

Desjardins also hit the crossbar earlier, and Sequim keeper Lillian Anderson made a terrific sliding save to stop another Desjardins rocket. Defensively, it was a full-team effort for Port Angeles, and Head Coach Dan Horton was able to rotate in some of his JV players. Sophomore Lilly Anne Lancaster again made her presence felt off the bench.

The Roughriders’ “green M&M connection” of Mariah Traband and Emma Desjardins combined for all four goals in Port Angeles’ 4-0 win over Sequim.

The Riders now gear up for a huge match Saturday at home against North Kitsap. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. The Vikings, unbeaten at 4-0 in league and 5-1 overall, blanked North Mason 3-0 last night. Port Angeles, now 3-1 in league and 5-1 overall, needs the win to stay in the championship race.

Meanwhile, high school football takes the spotlight tonight as the Roughriders, 1-2, celebrate homecoming against rival Sequim, who comes in at 3-0. The Wolves are averaging 28 points per game behind sophomore quarterback Kaiden Miller, who’s completing 71 percent of his passes for 402 yards and three touchdowns.

On defense, Sequim is allowing just 16 points per game, with senior linebacker Patrick Elias leading the way at 23 tackles. The Riders, meanwhile, are averaging 17 points per game but giving up 34.

Roughrider Head football coach Dustin Clark goes over the Sequim game plan with his 1-2 football team hungry for a upset win over Sequim.
