PORT ANGELES — North Olympic History Center Executive Director David Brownell told Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce members Wednesday that he is in talks with a developer who is exploring options for developing the grassy, 1-acre property in front of the old Lincoln School building, which is currently up for sale.

Brownell said he signed an exclusive, 6-month contract with the developer in August, which will give them time to see how the site, which is zoned for mixed-use development.

“To that end, we do have a developer who’s interested. We’ve signed a letter of intent to work exclusively with him for the next six months to explore what options are possible. He’s submitting proposals to the board. I can’t really say much more than that at this time, but we’re working through it, and as I tell our board frequently, even if it doesn’t work out with this developer, it’s good practice because we’re just going to keep doing it until something happens,” said Brownell.

Brownell told us earlier that he’s hopeful that the incentives being offered by the city to encourage affordable housing will make the property, which is listed for just under $600,000, even more attractive to developers.

If the property sells, Brownell says the proceeds will be used to demolish the dangerously dilapidated school building
