Selinda Barkhuis will present information on two varietals of grapes intended for consumption while fresh as opposed to grapes grown for wine production, juice production or drying into raisins. She will review her experience growing Himrod and Einset grapes on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at noon in the County Commissioners Meeting Room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Barkhuis will share photographs and present actual table grapes picked fresh from the vine. She will discuss location and support system considerations for planting grapes and will provide tips on how to keep vines pruned (just do it!).
Barkhuis has grown table grapes for several years on her city lot in central Port Angeles where she uses intensive, organic gardening techniques to grow a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Barkhuis was featured in the 2012 Master Gardeners Petals & Pathway Garden Tour and since then has been a regular presenter of the Green Thumb Gardening Tips Education Series.
This series is sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Extension Master Gardeners. Presentations are from noon to 1:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday each month (except November, December and January when one presentation is offered). The lectures educate home gardeners on planting and maintaining sustainable gardens and landscapes locally. They are free and open to the public; however, donations are accepted and appreciated.
