SUMMARY:Field Notes Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“Field Notes” is a visual love letter to the birds of the Pacific Northwest—an exhibition where art\, observation\, and reverence for the natural world converge. Inspired by the legacy of John James Audubon and rooted deeply in the unique ecology of this region\, the show brings together contemporary artists whose work responds to the presence of birds not only as subjects of beauty\, but as symbols of change\, migration\, resilience\, and interconnectedness. \nAt the heart of “Field Notes” is a tribute to the late Anne Goetzman’s lifelong devotion to birds and art. A meticulous observer and skilled painter\, Goetzman’s work bridges science and soul—rendering each feather and wing with both precision and wonder. Her influence echoes throughout this exhibition\, not only in her own featured works\, but in the ethos of attentiveness and care that guides the artists here. From detailed studies to expressive interpretations\, each piece in “Field Notes” represents a moment of attention—of pausing to look\, to listen\, and to record. Collectively\, these works form a tapestry of Pacific Northwest life—ephemeral\, wild\, and deeply interconnected. \nVisitors are invited to experience the exhibition at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center from April 10th through July 5th. A series of programs will accompany the exhibition\, including an opening reception; a field trip in collaboration with Olympic BirdFest focused on enriching the experience of birding through scientific journaling; a Civic Minds + Creative Heart lecture in which four artists reflect on climate change through the lens of science; and a hand-built clay bird feeder workshop hosted by Olympic Coast Creative. \nFor details about these programs and how to participate\, please visit www.pafac.org.

SUMMARY:Conservation Connection
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our 18th Annual Conservation Connection (formerly known as Conservation Breakfast)! This year’s theme is Art in Conservation. Join us as we dive into the intersection of art and conservation in everyday life\, featuring local artists whose creative work is making a positive impact across the Pacific Northwest. \nFor example\, artist Gabriel Newton is fervently advocating for Orca conservation through a series of paintings entitled “SUPER POD : All Together”. In this collection Newton depicts the remaining 74 Southern Orcas on reclaimed wood pieces\, from the shores of the Salish Sea. \nDuring the artist panel discussion\, co-hosted by North Olympic Land Trust and the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center\, the audience will find out how Newton’s project made waves in Olympia\, and how all the invited artists weave conservation into their work. Following the panel discussion\, this year’s Out Standing in the Field winner will be awarded\, and we’ll share an exciting update from the Land Trust. \nAfter the presentation portion of the afternoon audience members and presenters will have a chance to mingle and view works by the artists\, while enjoying a hot cup of coffee. \nThis is a FREE community event and we do highly encourage you to RSVP ahead of time!”

SUMMARY:Dungeness River Nature Center OPAS Program: “Beyond the Burrow—Secret Lives of Puffins Across the North Pacific”
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Katie Stoner\, PhD Candidate\, Oregon State University\nImagine yourself crawling through tall grass\, covered in mud\, reaching into long dark tunnels and hoping to find the soft feathers of a puffin before meeting the snap of its powerful bill. Those same birds\, with their bright beaks\, golden tufts\, and striking “horns\,” draw people from around the world to see the beloved “clowns of the sea.” But behind the charm are fierce marine predators\, navigating rapid environmental change\, with an uncertain future.\nTravel with Katie to the Kodiak Archipelago of Alaska and join her team as they track puffins across vast winter migrations and work to uncover threats shaping their conservation. Gain insights as Katie shares findings from her PhD research begun in 2021 at Oregon State University in collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service—research focused primarily on evaluating population trends\, winter migrations\, and conservation threats for tufted and horned puffins from Kodiak Island.

SUMMARY:PORT TOWNSEND COMMUNITY DANCE!
DESCRIPTION:The Port Townsend Community Dance takes place Saturday\, April 18th at the Quimper Grange. The Grange is located in Port Townsend’s Dundee Hill neighborhood at 1219 Corona Street. Doors open at 7:15 with dancing from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm. \nApril’s dance caller is Suzanne Girardot. Suzanne’s enthusiastic and clear dance teaching and calling have made her a favorite on both coasts. Her infectious laugh and easy-going personality put even the very beginning dancer at ease on the dance floor. \nWe’re thrilled to host the Boiler Room String Band for our April dance! The Boiler Room String Band is an all-youth string band formed at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in 2025. One of their greatest inspirations is The Onlies\, who taught them many of their favorite tunes. \nThe Port Townsend Community Dance is inspired by traditional kitchen and barn dances and features a mixture of traditional sets\, always danced to live music along with a dance caller. All experience levels are welcome; all dances are taught! Come alone\, with a friend\, a partner\, family – or with the whole village! \nAdmission for the April dance is free\, thanks to sponsorship from the Country Song and Dance Society and the City of Port Townsend Arts Commission! And\, donations to our program are always appreciated. Please bring your own personal water bottle and consider arriving on foot or by bicycle if possible! \nDave Thielk \n\n\n\n\nedavidt@ptcommunitydance.org\n‪(971) 266-3170
