Port Mulls New Tax Levy To Keep Marina Afloat

  1. PORT ANGELES – If the Port of Port Angeles is going to continue to operate the John Wayne Marina at the current level of service AND pay for needed repairs and upgrades in the future, Clallam County taxpayers will most likely have to approve a new tax levy.

That was the takeaway in Thursday’s open meeting with the Port of Port Angeles staff and Port Commissioners in City Hall.

Director of Engineering Chris Hartman reported that the moorage floats would have to be replaced by the year 2035, and the estimated cost would be $22 million. Because special elections are expensive, some of those present believe the time to take it to voters is this November. Commissioner Steve Burke:

That’s assuming the residents of Clallam County want to hold onto the marina. At least two developers have shown interest in buying it, but so far the vast majority of public comment has been against doing so.

As the Commissioners mull the options, they’ve announced three new opportunities for residents to express their views. The so-called “Listening Sessions” are scheduled to take place on July 2ND. The first one in Forks, the next in Port Angeles, and the last in Sequim.

Three listening sessions, all on Monday, July 2ND. The exact times will be announced in the near future.
