PORT ANGELES – The Port Angeles city council could decide to move forward with a lawsuit against the federal government.
Today, the council meets behind closed doors to talk about the potential litigation.
They are expected to return to open session late this afternoon with a decision on whether the city will move ahead with a lawsuit over the water treatment facilities on the Elwha River.
For more than a year, the city and federal government have been in talks with the hand over of the facilities from the National Park Service to the city. The city contends the facilities are not adequate and will cost far more than was expected to operate.
The park service disagrees and says the city is obligated to take over the systems as was prescribed in the legislation that removed the two dams on the Elwha river and set up the treatment facilities to protect the city’s water supply.
