Woman hangs self in Clallam County jail

PORT ANGELES – An inmate in the Clallam County jail committed suicide over the weekend.

About 9:20 Saturday morning, corrections deputies found 42-year-old Amy Specht hanging from a bedsheet, fashioned as a noose and draped over her cell door.

Deputies and medics tried to resuscitate her, but she was pronounced dead at the jail.

Specht, from Port Angeles, was arrested August 13th on outstanding arrest warrants for forgery and theft. She was in jail on $10,000 bail.

The suicide was captured on the jail’s security camera system. Upon reviewing the video footage, investigator’s observed Specht exiting her cell at about 9 am with the bedsheet wrapped around her neck. Specht is seen draping her bedsheet over her cell door while standing on a chair in the dayroom before hanging herself.

At the time of hanging, the jail area was occupied by 4 other female inmates including Specht’s cell mate. Neither the jail staff nor the 4 inmates housed with Specht were aware she had any suicidal ideation.

Port Angeles police are leading an investigation into the suicide.
