SEQUIM – North Olympic Land Trust has launched a campaign to conserve it’s largest single farm ever in Clallam County.
The 132-acre farm just outside of Sequim, known as Wonderland and the 80, has been farmed by five generations of the Smith and Schmuck families. Today, the property grows feed for one of Clallam County’s two remaining dairies, as well as barley and a variety of seed crops.
The Land Trust’s “Friends of the Fields” campaign aims to raise $180,000 by mid-October. Of that goal, about $80,000 has already been raised. Because of its notable size and “Prime” soils, as classified by the USDA, the Land Trust was granted some State and Federal funds to help keep the land available for local agriculture.
Located at Port Williams and Schmuck Roads, the farm is often visited by the resident elk herd, as well as flocks of swans during migration season.
Since it was founded in 1990, North Olympic Land Trust has worked with landowners and the community to conserve more than 520 acres of active farmland throughout the Sequim-Dungeness Valley.
