PORT ANGELES – A ceremony and concert this evening will mark the end of the project to put safety barriers on the 8th Street Bridges in Port Angeles.
Starting at 5:30, the ceremony on the eastern bridge will include remarks from officials, a blessing and then a concert.
Port Angeles city councilmember Cherrie Kidd says it’s not a party, but a celebration of the community coming together to make the project happen.
The community donated tens of thousands of dollars toward the $780,000. The effort was amplified last year as the city saw a spike in suicides from the 100-foot tall bridges.
Tonight’s “Concerts on the Pier” has been moved to the bridge. Starting at 6 pm, the bluegrass band “The Weavills” will perform at the bridge not at the pier.
The city will be closing the eastern bridge at about 3:30 this afternoon and setting up a detour until about 10 tonight to make way for the ceremony and concert.
