Back to school Monday in Port Angeles as paraeducator strike ends

PORT ANGELES – It’s back to school today for Port Angeles public school students. A two-day strike by the districts paraeducators has ended.

The district and paras agreed to a new three-year contract with a 15% pay increase. The paraeducators will see 5% pay hikes in each of the next three years. Paraeducators voted 96 percent in favor of the new contract Friday evening. The District will vote on the pact in December.

The paraeducators went on strike last Thursday, becoming the first group of paraeducators bargaining group in the state to take such a work action. The Port Angeles teachers’ union agreed to honor the picket lines, which forced the district to shut down school last Thursday and Friday due to a lack of personnel.
