PORT ANGELES – The city of Port Angeles may give tax incentives to spur development of multi-family housing.

The city council next week takes up a proposed ordinance that gives developers a break if they create such housing. It’s the first time ever the city has turned to tax incentives for this issue.

City manager Nathan West says it’s one effort to try to ease a shortage of affordable housing in the city.

The city council approved a resolution last month moving the plan forward. At it’s meeting January 15th, council may have a first reading of the proposed ordinance.

West says the city in the next few weeks should be getting a report on a housing needs assessment conducted last year…

The city council has prioritized lack of affordable housing as top issue facing the city. The city last year launched a housing task force to start looking more closely at the problem.
