Drilling company punished for explosives mishap

WASHOUGAL, Wash. – The state has fined a drilling company and suspended its license to buy explosives after a 20-pound rock from a construction site crashed through the roof of a home and landed in a child’s bedroom earlier this year.

The incident happened Jan. 16 at the Lookout at the Ridge apartment complex in Washougal, where crews from North Idaho Drilling Inc. were blasting on the site of a new subdivision.

In addition to a $14,500 fine against the company, L&I said it also suspended the owner’s license as well as the license to purchase explosives.

A rock about the size of a football sailed 250 feet through the air before crashing through the family’s roof.
