PORT ANGELES – A man wanted for multiple crimes in connection with a car crash early Monday morning at the Safeway east of Port Angeles, is back in custody.

23-year-old Brian Powless was arrested yesterday evening when he was spotted in a car stopped by police in Sequim.

Powless was wanted after a collision near the intersection of Highway 101 and N. Brook Street in Port Angeles early Monday morning.

During a search of the area, two adults arrived at the Safeway store there and told deputies they were passengers in the vehicle at the time of the collision.

Deputies developed probable cause that Powless was driving the vehicle at the time of the collision and had fled the scene. The passengers told Deputies that Powless was inhaling fumes from an aerosol can (a practice commonly referred to as “huffing”) just moments prior to the collision.

Following his arrest yesterday, Powless was transported to Olympic Medical Center where he received medical treatment for injuries he incurred in the accident and was booked into the Clallam County Jail for felony hit and run, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment and driving while license suspended. His preliminary bail was set at 130-thousand dollars.
