Lauridsen roadwork commences on Monday

PORT ANGELES – The two-month project to make Lauridsen Boulevard in Port Angeles a safer roadway for drivers and pedestrians gets under way on Monday. Besides the total resurfacing of the road from Lincoln Street to just west of the Lauridsen Bridge, the will be several other upgrades.

In April, the City asked for input from the public about the safety features they’d like to see along the busy route.

Here’s Engineer Jonathan Boehme.

“Well, we had a lot of great input, some some good suggestions we were able to incorporate in the project and then some suggestions that you know, we’ve basically put on our list to look at in the future when we have additional funding. We’re putting in a choker island to try to slow vehicles down on Lauridsen. And then we’re also putting in some pedestrian refuge islands at the the marked crosswalks, which will make it much safer to cross. So you can cross one lane of traffic, wait there, and then continue to cross the remainder of the road. It’s going to be a great new refresh of the the road through there and it will be much safer and an improved ride condition when the project is complete.”

There will also be new ADA accessibility sidewalk ramps, designated turn lanes at Peabody Street, and traffic-calming islands between Vine and Albert Streets.

The City plans to keep Lauridsen open to traffic throughout the project, but motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes around the work zone.

The project completion is expected to be in the last week of September.
