CLIFFDELL, Wash. – A wildfire burning east of Mount Rainier in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has scorched about 2,500 acres and prompted officials to issue mandatory evacuation notices for some homes in the area.
As of Monday morning, 26 homes there are under Level 3 “get out now” mandatory evacuation in the Rock Creek Drainage area.
In addition, 270 homes are under a Level 2 “be prepared to leave” evacuation notice along both sides of State Route 410 from the Fire District 14 station to Cliffdell.
The so-called Left Hand Fire is believed to have started from a lightning strike on July 23.
Several firefighting helicopters worked through Sunday to help keep the fire east of Highway 410. Strong winds have contributed to the growth of the fire.
Several roads have also been closed in the area, including Forest Roads 1702 and 1701.
Highway 410 is open to the public but fire officials are asking motorists to avoid the area if possible.
About 450 firefighters are in the area working to battle the blaze.
